| MEDIA FOCUS SPARKS SHARP INCREASE IN ALLIANCE MEMBERSHIP It’s been busy. Over the past two weeks, representatives of the ALLIANCE have been in the newspapers, radio, and television here, in Italy, and throughout Europe responding to actions taken against Christopher Columbus, Italian Americans, and our heritage. Between the Wayland School Committee’s unanimous vote to eliminate Columbus Day from the school calendar to the hate crime perpetrated by vandals lopping of the head of a privately paid for Christopher Columbus statue, to the Medford School Committee’s abandonment of transparency or community involvement by deciding to change the name of the Columbus School – the Italian American Alliance has been very busy indeed. |
| For as long as the Italian American ALLIANCE exists we will confront public officials who exhibit bigotry against Italian Americans or who unjustly defame our national heritage. That is a promise ! |
| In Wayland, Virginia Gardner was named Executive Director of our new Wayland, Weston, and Waltham Area Chapter. Within two weeks of her appointment, she produced a rally in Wayland to support Police, Veterans, and First Responders which attracted some 50 attendees. The Chapter was established after the Wayland School Committee met, in the middle of a pandemic, without public involvement, and replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Acting on the strength of a single phone call, the Wayland School Committee probably thought that nobody would notice. They were wrong. |

| ‘WOLFMANN” – A NATIVE AMERICAN JOINS THE WAYLAND CHAPTER OF THE ALLIANCE WITH OUR GINNY GARDNER The vandalism of the Columbus statue on Columbus Park happened in the dark of night by cowardly thugs. The statue was paid for by private money and constitutes a Hate Crime. All that aside, the ALLIANCE is demanding an investigation to find, arrest, and convict the cowards responsible for the destruction. The ALLIANCE has also gathered up the stakeholders as well as key leaders in Boston’s North End for an upcoming meeting with Boston’s Mayor Walsh. In the next few days, our President is expected to name a Medford resident to serve as the ALLIANCE’s Executive Director for Medford. However, as every teacher knows – you cannot teach people who do not want to learn. So far, the Medford School Committee has shown itself to be invulnerable to learning anything that deviates from their faulty knowledge of history.
