WASHINGTON, D.C. – Thursday, August 9, 2018 – The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest LGBTQ civil rights group, has endorsed U.S. Rep. Michael E. Capuano for re-election, citing his strong track record of standing up for the LGBTQ community on issues from marriage equality to transgender rights to supporting the Yes on 3 ballot question to protect Massachusetts’ anti-discrimination law.
“I’ve always believed in standing up for what’s right, not what’s popular, and that’s more important now than ever,” said Rep. Capuano. “We are in the fight of our lives against Donald Trump and his destructive policies, from nominating right-wing Supreme Court justices to blocking transgender people from serving in the military. We will fight these policies and hateful rhetoric every day, and make sure that here in Massachusetts we stand up for protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. We won’t go backward. We’ll continue to make sure everyone is accepted, and celebrated, for who they are.”
Rep. Capuano has been one of the strongest supporters of LGBTQ equality in Congress. Rep. Capuano first supported marriage equality in 1998 and fought tirelessly against a Constitutional Amendment to ban same-sex marriage. He also worked to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and served as an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act, which would make it unlawful to discriminate against an individual on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity in areas such as housing, employment, and public accommodations. He is a proud supporter of Yes on 3 to ensure that everyone in Massachusetts will be treated equally and with respect, no matter what their gender identity.
Rep. Capuano has also been endorsed by the Bay State Stonewall Democrats, the Massachusetts chapter of LGBTQ Democrats. Additionally, Rep.
